Bodelon EstateLore - Settlement Canon
Bodelon Mansion
145 b. OW - 70 OW
The Bodelon Estate in 25 OW.
Location
Wooded foothills of the Ironjaw Mountains, near the border of Armuria and Vivien
Bodelon was a small estate, consisting of a mansion house and modest partly forested land. The building consisted of one two-story house, which was occasionally restored, and a few appended ancillary buildings.
Bodelon as a Residence, 145 - 20 b. OW
The lands above the small farming town of Innevi were quite poor, usable for animal pasture and lumber cutting but little else. The site of Bodelon saw a lumber operation until 152 b. OW, when all usable nearby trees were cut down and the site was left to occasional use by animal herds.
In 147, the wealthy Commissioner Vonedro, the overseer of an Armurian weapons plant, came to the region of Innevi looking for some grounds to build a country residence. He purchased seven hectares of grasslands and young trees on one side of the country road. It was poor terrain, with little game in the woods, but Vonedro cared solely about peace and quiet and a nice green view.
A year later, his house was built off the style and pattern of other elites' country residences. The centerpiece was a two-story stone building with large windows. There was additionally a collonaded porch and a collonade protruding into the small garden on one side; this garden consisted of hedges cut in neat geometric patterns and small junipers. The house was quite large: there was ample space on the first floor for family bedrooms and two guestrooms, and on the ground floor for a kitchen, a large dining room, and even quarters for the governess. Other staff were lodged in small houses outside, adjoining the courtyard with a pulley well.
The estate survived with little more than cosmetic changes over more than a century, being sold on twice to different elite families. The last owners, masters of the United Armurian Lumber Guild, rarely lived in the house and mostly left it standing empty.
Militia Relay, 20 b. OW - 3 OW
During the unrest and insurgent fighting that followed Armuria's invasion of Vivien in 22 b. OW, the house was plundered by a group of Vivien insurgents. After the Armurian militia ousted the insurgents, it occupied the house for some time. It actually stood in a good location near a hotspot of insurgent activity, and came to be used as a local headquarters for milita operations. During this use, the house was made more defensible: the old building was renovated with somewhat smaller windows; the windows on the lower floor were to a large part shuttered closed; and a tower was built on the outside, offering an extra layer of defense. Aside from a mob of peasants throwing stones, the relay never came under actual attack.
The insurgency died down, and so did the need for a militia presence in the area. Bodelon was abandoned once again.
Orcish Guard Relay and Officers' House, 14 - 68 OW
The Innevi region was part of the lands that became Boen-Armurian Shared Territory in 12 OW.
The Armurian authorities were looking for countryside residences, to use as officer houses where Boen elites could rest for a few days. A handful of individuals might be assigned permanent lodgings there as a secondary residence, while others might rotate in as a short leave. Bodelon, an empty residence in state ownership, was a perfect candidate. The house was swiftly refurbished, converted from a defensible garrison to an officer house.
Bodelon came into use as an officers' house in 14 OW. It had six rooms, giving it a lot of space for orcish elites. There was also space for five staff, employees paid from Armurian coffers who cooked, cleaned, and served the orcs who came to use the house.
The Boens also noticed Bodelon's ideal location, along an important road, as a relay for Orcish Guard messengers outside of town. In the Guard, messengers were given near-officer status because of their great importance and bureaucratic powers, so it was customary to mix messengers and officers. Besides, Bodelon was already laid out as an ideal relay, with stables and a tavern-like service. Thus the estate served a dual use, though to the staff the usage seemed the same: orcs came off the road, ate and drank, slept, perhaps stayed a few days, and then left again.
